Why One Health Plan Rarely Fits Every Employee
Imagine you have 50 employees.
One employee is 25 years old, rarely visits a doctor, and wants the lowest premium possible.
Another has three children and values comprehensive family coverage.
A third employee sees specialists at Mass General Brigham and does not want to change doctors.
Another wants an HSA-qualified plan to build tax-free healthcare savings for the future.
Should all four employees be placed into the exact same health plan?
That is the challenge many employers face with traditional group health insurance.
The reality is that there is rarely one “perfect” plan for everyone. Different employees have different healthcare needs, financial priorities, and provider preferences.
In my experience, employees appreciate having choices—but only when they also have access to clear guidance and education.
- Choice without guidance creates confusion.
- Choice with education creates confidence.
The goal is not simply to offer more options. The goal is to help employees understand which option is most appropriate for their personal situation.
As workforces become more diverse, the conversation is shifting from “What is the best health plan?” to “How do we help each employee choose the plan that best fits their needs?”
We’ve also shared this topic as a presentation on LinkedIn, where you can explore the key points visually.
